In many cases, SGI rolls with an acicular matrix are preferred for their wear-resisting qualities. To this end the iron is alloyed with nickel and molybdenum, which permits an acicular structure to form in the as-cast condition.

These rolls are most suitable for heavier sections, where added strength and depth of hardness are required. Sand-cast acicular SGI iron is used for certain special purposes, with hardness typically from 65 to 75 Shore D.

An as-cast acicular structure gives added strength and depth of hardness for heavier sections.
